The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority and the decision to close, delay , or release school is not taken lightly. Before any decision is made about weather affecting our school day, the Superintendent consults with people inside and outside of the district. The decision is with the intention of what is best for ALL students and staff and recognize it may not fit with individual circumstances. If a parent/guardian decide it is best to keep their child home then we will support this and ask this be communicated to the school so we can document the absence appropriately. We are committed to keeping students, families, and staff safe, and to keep the community informed of weather-related school closings, delays, and cancellations in a timely manner.
The District utilizes the National Weather Service (NWS) and Johnson County EMA to track weather to make informed decisions. We also utilized the NWS's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) wind chill index chart as part of our decision making process.
Cold Days
Utilizing the wind chill index chart, school will be canceled if the forecast for 10:00a the following morning show temperatures and wind speeds that combined fall into the area causing frostbite times of 30 minutes or less. Notifications regarding cancellations will be made no later than 6:00a on the morning of the cancellation. As a general practice, all activities are canceled unless otherwise noted.
Snow Day
School will be canceled if heavy snow and/or icy conditions make it exceedingly hazardous or impossible for school buses to travel their routes and/or for employees and students to report to school safely. Weather conditions are constantly monitored using multiple sources. Decisions and notifications will be made by 6:00a on the morning of the cancellation. If it is possible the night before, decisions and notifications will be made by 8:30p. Messages will be sent through SchoolMessenger via email, text and phone call. It will also be on KCII, KCRG, and KWWL. Finally, a banner will run on our Home page of the school website saying either "2-Hour Delay" or "Closed". As a general practice, all activities are canceled unless otherwise noted.
